High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) in London

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a clinically proven, non-invasive treatment that lifts, tightens and remodels the skin from deep within, without surgery or downtime.

What Is High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)?

HIFU is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that delivers high-intensity focused ultrasound energy to targeted layers of the skin and, where appropriate, the subcutaneous tissue (fat). The aim is to trigger a controlled regenerative response that improves firmness and definition.

Unlike lasers or radiofrequency, HIFU reaches the deep structural layers of the skin, including the SMAS layer, which is the same layer tightened during a surgical facelift. This enables HIFU to lift and firm the face, improve jawline definition, tighten the eye area, and reduce skin laxity without needles or surgery.

By stimulating collagen  (the key structural protein responsible for skin elasticity and firmness) HIFU creates a smoother, tighter appearance that many clients describe as a “non-surgical facelift.”

It is especially beneficial for ice pick scars, box scars, enlarged pores, crepey skin, fine lines, stretch marks and laxity of the face and body.

HIFU for Body Tightening & Contouring

HIFU is not limited to the face. It can also be used on areas such as the abdomen, arms, thighs, knees and bra line to tighten loose skin and improve overall contour. This makes it an effective option for clients experiencing skin laxity following weight loss, pregnancy or natural ageing, who want visible firming without surgery or downtime.

In selected areas, HIFU can also target the subcutaneous fat layer. The focused ultrasound energy generates controlled heat that disrupts fat cell membranes through a process known as heat denaturation. These damaged fat cells are then gradually broken down and cleared by the body’s natural metabolic and lymphatic pathways.

By tightening the skin and reducing localised fat at the same time, HIFU creates a more sculpted, refined appearance. This dual effect makes it particularly useful for areas such as the double chin, jawline, abdomen and body contours, offering a non-invasive alternative to surgical fat reduction and skin tightening procedures.

How HIFU Works

HIFU delivers precisely focused ultrasound energy into multiple depths of the skin using specialised cartridges. These include the epidermis, papillary dermis, reticular dermis and the deep SMAS layer.

At each depth, the ultrasound creates tiny controlled thermal points, which trigger a biological repair response. This causes immediate tissue contraction and initiates a longer-term process of collagen and elastin regeneration known as neocollagenesis.

HIFU works by triggering the body’s natural repair response.

Inflammation phase : Ultrasound energy delivered to the dermis induces a controlled inflammatory response. This is followed by fibroplasia: the migration and activation of connective tissue cells involved in wound healing.

Remodelling phase : Granulation tissue forms, and collagen fibres are rebuilt in a tighter, more uniform pattern. Externally, clients often observe a firmer, tighter complexion over a period of 3 weeks to 6 months.

At the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) level, the heat also causes structural tightening of the fibrous support network of the face and neck, producing a lifting effect similar to a surgical facelift but without incisions or recovery time.

As healing continues over the following weeks and months, the skin becomes firmer, smoother and more lifted, with progressive improvement in contour.

At Ace Skin Health Clinic, we use Focus Dual by Lynton UK, one of the most advanced medical-grade HIFU systems available. Focus Dual is unique because it uses Safety Assist Transducers (SAT), which enable high-energy ultrasound to be delivered with exceptional accuracy and safety. SAT technology creates a stable focal point deep within the skin while protecting the surface, making treatments safer, more comfortable, and suitable for all skin tones and types.

Does HIFU hurt?

Most clients describe HIFU as a sensation of heat and deep tingling rather than pain. You may feel brief bursts of warmth or mild discomfort as the ultrasound energy is delivered into the deeper layers of the skin, particularly over bony areas such as the jawline. The treatment is well-tolerated and does not require anaesthetic, although we can adjust the settings to keep you comfortable.

Is there any downtime after HIFU?

There is little to no downtime. Some clients experience mild redness, warmth, or slight tenderness immediately after treatment, but this usually resolves within a few hours. You can return to normal activities immediately.

How soon will I see results?

Some tightening is noticeable immediately due to tissue contraction, but the main results develop gradually as new collagen forms. Most clients see visible improvement between 3 and 12 weeks, with continued lifting and firming for up to six months after treatment.

How long do the results last?

Results typically last 12 to 18 months, depending on age, skin quality, and lifestyle. Many clients choose to have a maintenance treatment once or twice a year to preserve firmness and lift.

How many HIFU sessions will I need?

Many clients achieve excellent results with a single treatment; however, for more advanced laxity or body contouring, a course of treatments may be recommended. This will be discussed during your consultation.

Is HIFU safe for all skin tones?

Yes, HIFU is safe for all skin types and tones. At Ace Skin Health Clinic, we use Focus Dual with Safety Assist Transducers, which allow precise energy delivery while protecting the skin’s surface.

Can HIFU replace a surgical facelift?

HIFU is an excellent option for mild to moderate skin laxity and for clients seeking lifting and tightening without surgery. It will not produce results as dramatic as a surgical facelift, but it can significantly improve skin firmness, jawline definition, and facial contours in a natural way.

Can HIFU be used around the eyes?

Yes, HIFU can be used to tighten the skin around the eyes and lift the brows, helping to reduce hooding and improve eye definition without injections or surgery.

Can HIFU reduce a double chin?

Yes, HIFU can help break down small fat deposits and tighten the skin under the chin, making it an effective option for improving jawline definition and reducing a double chin.

Is HIFU suitable for body fat?

Yes. HIFU is commonly used to break down fat deposits in areas such as the abdomen, arms, thighs, knees, and bra line, as well as to tighten loose skin and improve contour in selected areas.
