Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) Removal in London
Safe & Effective Treatment for Darker Skin Tones
What Is Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN)?
Are you bothered by small, dark, raised spots on your cheeks, neck, or around your eyes? Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) is a common, benign skin condition that primarily affects individuals of African, Caribbean, and Asian descent.
Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) appears as small, smooth, dark brown or black papules. Although completely harmless and non-contagious, they often increase in size and number over time. DPN is most commonly seen in melanin-rich skin tones and is considered a variant of seborrhoeic keratosis.
Many clients seek removal for cosmetic reasons, as the spots can create uneven skin texture or become irritated by clothing or jewellery. As DPN is often hereditary, early treatment can prevent the spots from becoming larger or more numerous.
At Ace Skin Health Clinic in Islington, we specialize in the safe removal of DPN. We understand that darker skin requires a specialized, “low-trauma” approach to prevent scarring or unwanted pigment changes. Using medical-grade technology, we can restore your smooth complexion with precision and care.
About DPN removal
What DPN Removal Can Help With
- Removal of raised dark spots (DPN lesions)
- Smoother, more even skin texture
- Clearer complexion, especially on the face and neck
- Reduction of clustered or multiple lesions
- Improved skin confidence and appearance
- Prevention of lesions becoming more prominent over time
- Better makeup application on treated areas
- Minimising irritation from friction (e.g. clothing or shaving)
- Safe treatment of lesions on darker skin tones
- Precise removal with minimal impact on surrounding skin
Our Specialized Removal Methods
Treating DPN on darker skin tones requires preparing the skin with melanin-regulating ingredients and expert energy control to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). At our Islington clinic, we use two gold-standard methods:
Advanced Electrolysis (Thermocoagulation)
This is often the preferred method for DPN. A superfine, sterile probe is used to deliver a tiny burst of heat directly into the lesion. This “cauterises” and dries out the DPN spot without damaging the surrounding healthy skin.
Why it’s great: It is highly precise, can be used on more delicate areas such as around the eyes, and offers the lowest risk of pigment disruption.
Nd:YAG Laser (Lynton Motus AY)
Our Lynton Motus AY is one of the few lasers safe for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength bypasses the surface melanin to target the structure of the lesion.
What to Expect During & After Treatment
The Procedure: Treatment is generally quick, depending on the number of lesions treated. You may feel slight warmth and a “prickle” as each spot is treated. We use controlled, low-energy techniques specifically adapted for pigmentation-prone skin, ensuring safe and predictable results.
Immediately after: The treated spots will appear darker and will form tiny “micro-scabs” similar to a grain of black pepper.
Healing Time: Healing is gradual and an important part of achieving a good result. These tiny crusts naturally flake off within 3–14 days. Do not pick them, as this ensures the smoothest result.
The Result: Once the crusts fall away, the skin underneath may be slightly lighter or pink, but it will gradually blend with your natural skin tone over the following weeks.

At Ace Skin Health Clinic, we believe informed clients achieve the best results. These FAQs cover the most common questions about our approach, safety standards, and treatment process, so you can book with confidence and clarity.
Still have questions?
Get in touch with our team and we will answer all of your questions before you book a session.
Is DPN removal safe for darker skin tones?
Yes, when performed correctly. We use low-trauma techniques specifically adapted for melanin-rich skin to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.
Will DPN come back after removal?
Treated lesions are gone permanently. However, since DPN is often genetic, your skin may develop new spots in other areas over time.
Does DPN removal hurt?
Most clients find the treatment very tolerable and describe it as a minor stinging/heat sensation.
Is there downtime?
Downtime is minimal, but small scabs will form and naturally shed.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
Usually, DPN lesions can be treated in a single session. However, depending on the number, size and depth of the lesions, additional sessions may be recommended for optimal clearance.
We often take a progressive approach, especially for larger areas, to support safe healing and reduce pigmentation risk.
Can I wear makeup after?
We recommend keeping the area clean and free of makeup for the first 3-5 days to allow the skin to begin the healing process safely.
Does DPN removal leave scars?
When performed by a specialist using Advanced Electrolysis, the risk of scarring is extremely low. We focus on a superficial, controlled removal to preserve skin integrity.
Is DPN dangerous?
No, DPN is harmless, but many people choose removal for cosmetic reasons.
